Currently, S. Javiana is the 5th most commonly recovered serotype from human illness in both the NARMS and PHLIS programs. Produce outbreaks due to S. Javiana emphasize both the potential of new or non-traditional Salmonella serotypes to cause widespread foodborne illness, and the unique challenges in preventing foodborne epidemics where ready-to-eat fruits and vegetables are the vehicle.
